40 Years of Site Experience
I have worked my way through the trade from the ground up. That experience helps me recognise problems early, understand how buildings go together and find practical solutions when a project presents a challenge.
The Meikle Story
Meikle Homes was founded by our Founder & Project Manager, Paul Meikle. Paul has spent 40 years in the building trade, but his story started long before he ever ran his own company.
Read Paul's storyGrowing up with dyslexia, I found school difficult. Reading and writing did not come naturally to me, but practical work did. From a young age, I spent my Saturdays on building sites, sweeping floors, clearing houses and moving materials. By 14, I had left school and started working full-time.
Looking back, dyslexia shaped the way I learned to build. Where words on a page could be difficult, I found it natural to think visually. I could look at a piece of ground, a room or a drawing and picture how the finished project could come together. That way of thinking has stayed with me throughout my career.
I started at the bottom, working alongside my dad as a hod carrier. I watched him lay bricks, learned the trade properly and worked my way up to becoming a skilled bricklayer. That hands-on foundation gave me an understanding of construction that has never left me.
As my career developed, I moved into project management in London, running major site operations for subcontractors including Fly High Brickwork. I managed large teams and worked on multi-storey office buildings and housing developments, learning how to organise complex jobs, manage trades and maintain standards on busy commercial sites.
At 27, I took that experience and started my own building company. Today, at 52, I have four decades of site experience behind me, from carrying materials and laying bricks through to managing major developments and delivering residential extensions, loft conversions and full refurbishments.
What that experience means for my clients
I have worked my way through the trade from the ground up. That experience helps me recognise problems early, understand how buildings go together and find practical solutions when a project presents a challenge.
My time managing larger London projects taught me the importance of planning, organisation, quality control and keeping trades moving. I bring that same discipline to residential projects while keeping the service personal and straightforward.
My visual way of thinking helps me picture how the different parts of a build will come together. It means I am often thinking several stages ahead, considering the finished result as well as the work needed to get there.
I do not believe customers should be buried in building jargon. I prefer to explain things clearly and practically, so you understand what we are doing, why we are doing it and what happens next.
Built from the ground up
Building has been part of my life since I was a young lad sweeping sites on Saturdays. I have worked at almost every level of the trade, and I still take the same pride in seeing a job come together properly.
For me, Meikle Homes is about using that lifetime of practical experience to help people improve their homes and properties. It is about doing the job properly, being straightforward with people and creating work that both the customer and I can be proud of for years to come.
